Who Is Zohran Mamdani? New York City's 1st Indian-Origin Muslim Mayor (X @ZohranKMamdani)
New Delhi: In a historic win, Zohran Mamdani was elected the New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor. He defeated Republican Curtis Sliwa and independent Andrew Cuomo in a record-breaking election.
Zohran Mamdani was elected as the new Mayor of the New York City, after several months of campaign and political drama.
This election was special as it witnessed a huge turn out in record numbers. As per the reports of city’s Board of Elections, around two million people participated in the voting, before the polls closed at 9 pm. This made it historic as it was the highest turnout in a mayoral election since 1969.
His opponent Cuomo in contrast, called himself as a pro-business and pro-police moderate. Meanwhile, he stated that Mamdani had less experience to manage a city like New York.
It is worthy to be mentioned here that by Tuesday night, the Board of Elections stated that more than 1.85 million ballots had been cast.
This election gained much attention of even US President Donald Trump, who wrote a warning on his Truth Social platform just a day before the election.
Taking to his social media handle, Trump wrote, “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home,” Trump wrote. “As a Communist, this once-great city has zero chance of success, or even survival!”
Zohran Mamdani was born in 1991 in Kampala, Uganda. He was raised in a family that was deeply inclined towards art and activism. It is to be noted here that Zohran Mamdani is the son of popular filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani. Notably, Mira and Mahmood's cross-continental experience helped him shaped their son’s global perspective.
Recently, Zohran Mamdani also shared a video on his X, after his historic win in the Mayoral election.

During his victory speech, Zohran Mamdani directly addressed Donald Trump. He said "Donald Trump, since I know you are watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up."
